Different perspective about thanksgiving
From Eurocentric perspective, the pilgrims thought that they had the right to take possession of the land of the Native Americans that were living and taking care of their land for many years ago. On the other hand, few Native Americans that still conserve their culture and traditions, they know what's the truth of the Thanksgiving history, also in their point of view they don't celebrate thanksgiving for the coming of the Europeans to this country, but they give thanks for their ancestors.
In my opinion I think that the school is the primary source that is responsible to tell the true story about thanksgiving. The reason why teachers must teach their students about their true American story is because in the future the kids all grown up can tell to their children about this story too, and then it will be ingrained in all the Americans .

Mina, Thank you for sharing your ideas on this. I appreciate your point of view and I, too, believe that schools have a moral responsibility to teach from a critical perspective. That is, they should foster in students the ability to see that history can be, and is, understood and retold from multiple perspectives. And, yes, as you said, this is something that then can be reinforced by parents through the generations.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked after i heard the real story about thanksgiving holiday and native American segregation at that time. Even though the real story was sad but still the families got tother and strengthen the social relationship between the the family member.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mina,
